Ethanol-Blended Fuel Update: What You Need to Know

Effective January 1, 2026, all premium and premium dyed fuel in Canada will contain up to 10% ethanol, in accordance with new government mandates aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting renewable fuel use.

Ethanol is a renewable alcohol-based fuel made primarily from plant materials such as corn and wheat. Blending ethanol with gasoline helps lower overall carbon intensity while maintaining fuel performance for most modern vehicles and equipment.

For the majority of cars, trucks, and small engines manufactured within the past two decades, fuel containing up to 10% ethanol (commonly referred to as E10) is considered safe and compatible. However, some older vehicles, marine engines, recreational equipment, and small engines may require additional attention, as ethanol can attract moisture and affect certain fuel system components over time.

We encourage members and customers to consult their owner’s manuals or speak with a qualified service professional to confirm fuel compatibility. If your equipment is not approved for ethanol-blended fuel, alternative fuel solutions or stabilizing additives may be recommended.

Mid Island Co-op remains committed to providing clear, transparent information so our members can make informed choices. As regulations evolve, we will continue to keep our community updated on changes that impact the products you rely on every day.
